Southern California is known for its long stretches of beautiful beaches. Whether you are spending a day on the beach, or spending the night, Doheney State Beach offers amazing amenities to make your time at the beach the best ever. We frequently do day trips to Doheney and enjoy the accessibility, and ease of getting from the parking lot to the beach. There is generally plenty of parking (major holidays aside) and there are no large hikes or flights of stairs to get to the beach.
We have always wanted to camp at Doheney, but getting a reservation for a site can be tricky. We logged onto Reserve California six months in advance, promptly at 8am to secure our spot. Setting calendar reminders for six months in advance of when you’d like to camp is the best way to ensure that you will get your coveted beach camping site. The ranger informed us that they also do a lottery for no-shows/cancellations everyday around noon. So, if you are a local, this might be another option for you to get a spot here at Doheney State Beach.
The sites here are very close together, so be prepared to be friendly with your camp neighbors. The kids had a great time making new friends and dragging lots of sand inside our tent. There are clean bathrooms and showers throughout the camp ground, and wood available for purchase from the camp hosts. Just down the way from the campground, at the beach, there is the Boneyard Cafe, where they serve fresh and delicious food and craft beer. Their hours and menu can change seasonally so check out their site for current information. We had a good time taking a walk to The Boneyard and getting the kids an ice cream treat while we enjoyed a local beer and a pineapple mimosa, they also have great coffee and breakfast items. Additionally, there is a bike rental counter located next door, if you are looking to add biking to your camping adventure.
Each site comes with a fire pit, and they vary in location from right on the sand, to a few hundred yards from the beach. Any site here will put you in very close proximity to the shore. We scored an ocean front site and were blessed by the sounds of the waves crashing all night – it was awesome!
Doheney State Beach is a great place for families to camp, and everything is very convenient and easy – the hardest thing is getting that reservation!
